The Ares I-X (experimental version of Ares I) is scheduled to be launched 8AM this coming Tuesday, Oct. 27th. It differs from the final version of the Ares I in that it only has 4 of the 5 segments of the solid-rocket 1st stage. It has a mockup second stage (which will be liquid fueled), and mockup of the capsule (called Orion).
I'm not sure the Ares I (and Ares V) were the best choices for launch vehicles, but it's what NASA chose, so I hope it works.
